War and humanitarian crises create extraordinarily difficult living circumstances – and often leave observers on the ground and viewers at home speechless and hopeless. But we, as documentary photographers, often see it through another, probably wider lens. Very often, it is not just the horrific and tragic scenes that leave the deepest impressions on us – it is rather the perseverance and strength of those who live through conflicts and disasters, that remains on our minds long after our return home.
