Dennis and Patrick Weinert are filmmakers and photographers, whose work is centered around social and environmental issues, as well as armed conflicts.
Since 2017, the brothers have been based in various South and Southeast Asian countries, most recently in Thailand and Nepal.
Dennis and Patrick have found their way into the fields of journalism and documentary as autodidacts and subsequently established their film production companies Weinert Brothers GbR (Europe) and Weinert Brothers Limited (Asia), with which they specialise in telling stories from challenging environments and on under-reported subjects. As freelance correspondents for various German and European public broadcasters, the brothers have spent more than nine years reporting from Asia and Africa and have directed and shot documentaries in locations such as the Central African Republic, Congo-Kinshasa, Pakistan, India, Myanmar or Afghanistan. Their films were published on ARTE, NDR, DW, ZDF, 3sat, ARD Mediathek, SRF, funk and on NZZ Format.
In 2018, medium magazine listed Dennis and Patrick among the Top 30 Under 30 German journalists. For their documentary about the Ebola epidemic in eastern D.R. Congo in 2019, they received the Peter Scholl-Latour Award for conflict and crisis reporting. In 2021, Dennis’ and Patrick’s reportage on child labour in Pakistan was awarded with the Helmut Schmidt Journalistenpreis (1st Prize, Category Newcomer). When Dennis and Patrick are not working as TV correspondents, they focus on developing their personal experimental photography and film projects.
The brothers have written, curated and published two volumes of documentary photo books (2015 & 2019) and have directed and produced their debut essay short film Hinter unserem Horizont (Beyond our Horizon, 2020), which was commissioned by ZDF & 3sat and received a nomination for a Grimme Award.
While living in Vietnam between 2018 and 2021, Dennis and Patrick were invited to renowned film director Trần Anh Hùng’s directing masterclass, which inspired them to broaden the scope of their work beyond journalistic documentaries.
Currently, the brothers are developing new documentary and fiction projects.
